The 55-year-old from Kent is accused of carrying out the raid at the Chelsea Building Society in Sunbury-on-Thames in Surrey on Wednesday while on the run from HMP Standford Hill on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
Wheatley was detained on a street corner in Tower Hamlets in east London hours after it is alleged he robbed the building society.
He has also been charged by Surrey Police with possession of a firearm or imitation firearm and being unlawfully at large.
A second man, Kevin Perry, 53, from east London, has been charged with assisting an offender, perverting the course of justice and handling stolen goods.
